project abc : CALL TO ACTION
April 2, 2007
Relating to: calling for changes to the state's public school funding formula to be enacted by July 1, 2009. Please print the resolution to see the 'criteria' for a good funding formula.
Write letters to your legislator (addresses here) and ask them to sign on to this resolution as an indication of their willingness to be leaders in helping us fix state funding of education. When they respond that it doesn't really have the force of law, tell them you are looking for the force of intention. Tell them you are looking for a signal that they are going to fight to keep our school strong. Ask that they sign before the April 19 Press conference in Madison.
Support for Categorical Aids in Budget
April 2, 2007
Several items in the Governor's budget, especially in categorical aid will help cover inflation on some of the costs in the district. Write to our legislators and ask them to support or even increase those items to help mitigate the effects of the current funding formula which leaves a gap between allowable revenue and increased costs.

Letters to the Editor
Write a letter to convey an important piece of information and remind people that it is in all our interests to have a good public education system. The problem was not caused locally and cannot be fixed locally. To fix the situation in Waukesha, the system must be fixed for all kids statewide. We need a new funding formula based on what it costs to educate children, not some arbitrary and unfair formula.
Think of one idea you want to convey or some misinformation you want to correct. Then write some sentences to support that idea. Short letters are often more effective than long ones.
- All letters must be signed, have an address, and phone number.
- They should start, Dear Editor
- Keep them under 300 words.
- If you write something longer, call the editor to discuss making the letter a guest editorial.
- Newspapers like letters to be sent by e-mail to save them the time of retyping.
- Most papers limit letters to one published letter every two months.
